Sunday Sessions off Maketu

Written by Tim on June 12th, 2014.      0 comments

Launch location: next to the surf club at Maketu Beach. This beach is on the edge of the Maketu Estuary so it is tidal and can be like a small bar. If you're unfamiliar with it don't attempt to launch in the dark.
Launching Difficulty: medium (surf experience required)
Fishing location: large area of foul north of Town Point (see map). Use your sounder and chart plotter to locate rocks and fish.
Target: Big Snapper but kingfish and big trevally can frequently be encountered.
Method: anchor up and burley. Stray-line whole pilchards or fresh kahawai strips. Use 4/0 hooks and a 1/4oz ball sinker
Fishing Time: all day
Notes: the current out from Town Point can be strong and can create a confusing chop. Suitable for moderately experienced kayak fishermen. If you are new to the sport, anchor in the sheltered area next to the cliffs.
Bonus: toilets at the launch point, and a cafe/chip shop - take a change of clothes and get a hot feed afterward your day on the water.

What our customers say

quote Now I've stopped running I wanted to drop you a line to say a massive thank you for your incredible guiding services to get us across the Cook Strait. You put faith in us, with a lot of unknowns, and it was so cool how we pulled it off. It adds such a special twist to what I've achieved, and I think it will be very difficult to re-create.

It's been a very special adventure and we're so grateful for your contribution towards it.

Best wishes,

Jez Bragg.
North Face ultra-marathon runner.
